Polarity members Eliza Shephard and Alex Waite first crossed paths in 2016 when they both commenced study at the Australian National Academy of Music. A performance on 3MBS FM’s series The Talent brought them musically together. Following this performance, they realised that they rather enjoyed working together, and that they both had a bucket list of repertoire that they wanted to work through, from similar genres, styles and composers. They decided that in 2018 they would tackle one of the largest and most challenging duos for flute and piano “for fun”, Pierre Boulez’s Sonatine, which proved to be an inspiring and pivotal moment in their duo-playing time together. They officially became Polarity in late 2018, selecting the name because it not only displays their polar opposite personalities, but also their enormous selection of repertoire that they love performing. Together, Polarity creates dynamic and intriguing performances of the piano and flute repertoire, and as individual musicians, they have been described as 'fiery' and 'exciting', as well as are known for their engaging and risk-taking approaches to music.
